Story Warren Weekend, Vol. 14, Issue 12

Good morning,

Recently there was a social media trend where people posted what they looked like in the 90s, and all it did for me was make me glad that social media wasn’t around in the 90s. Too much flash combined with dark lipstick colors! It was a tough look. Nevertheless, I will always carry my love of Doc Martens and flannel.

Next weekend we will not be sending you our usual newsletter as it is Holy Week. We’ll be back the following weekend.

Don’t forget the giveaways we have running this month! Here’s our Middle Grade March giveaways, and here’s this month’s Mended Wood Literary Society giveaway. These both wrap up on Tuesday.

Around the Web

Children’s Books Aren’t (Just) for Children: “The Mary Poppins books finally got me to dip my toes in fantasy. The reveal in the classic The Lost Prince blew my mind and taught me to pay much closer attention to what I was reading. And Five Little Peppers and How They Grew inspired me to write my own first novel.”

This year, Indelible Grace music is marking thirty years of making music for the church. Here’s a great reflection on their history and the formative power of music and lyrics. “If we only ever sing songs about how we feel – and if the only feelings we sing about are love and devotion for God – then what happens when you open your eyes in the midst of the crowd, look around the room and admit to yourself, ‘I’m not really feeling this…’? It is a profoundly alienating experience.”

Around the Warren

This week we introduced you to some of our Middle Grade Allies: the people around the web who are working hard to bring quality, trusted resources to you and your middle grade readers. Check the post for more places to visit and people to follow!

Wednesday was a significant date in Middle-earth history if you’re inclined towards such celebrations. Find out more about that in this post. “Good news about the end of evil’s reign would arrive on the same day in Middle-earth as it did here on earth. When we see news of a miraculous conception come to a young woman in Galilee, we can imagine a crumbling stronghold. Evil’s end is sure.”

Something to do with your kids

If you are interested in getting your kids into birdwatching, here are some tips from a naturalist and photographer. “Whether it is spotting a bright flash of feathers in the garden or learning the familiar call of a bird that returns each spring, these small acts of noticing can engage a lifelong curiosity about our amazing feathered friends.”

Something to watch

Here’s a good one for Thursday or Friday of next week.

Thanks for reading. We’re on your side.
