I’m so excited about this. Our own Jamin Still is an amazing artist and Doug McKelvey is wonderful writer. This promises to be fantastic. I hope our Story Warren community will get behind this project! —S. D. Smith
The Wishes of the Fish King is my latest illustration project, and I couldn’t be more excited to tell you about it! I’ve teamed up with author Douglas Kaine McKelvey to bring this tale to life. Douglas describes the story this way: “The Wishes of the Fish King is a poignant, poetic reflection on a bright and fleeting season, expressed in the voice of a parent but seen through the innocent eyes and fantastic imagination of a child. The story conjures fairy tale elements, blending them seamlessly with the natural world and making one bright weave of the two. The words and images flow into one another, transporting readers inside a storybook universe, where one briefly remembers that the wonders of this world are–especially when experienced for the first time by a young child–as deeply fraught with real magic as any fairy tale ever was.”
I love this story and I’ve loved collaborating with Douglas on the illustrations. If you’d like to learn more about it and be a part of making it happen, check out our Kickstarter campaign going on now!
