We’ve been moving offices at my church job and this week the first set of signs came in. The new shared office spaces are named after streets in our city to tell them apart, and we needed signs for over the doorways. I landed on the idea of formatting them as street signs, and I got to put them all up this week—every time I’ve walked into the space since, I’ve been utterly delighted at how they look. It worked SO well. What’s the last thing you tried that just WORKED exactly how you imagined it?

Our Father Values His Children
Kari Stainback reminds us of our identity as beloved children.
- This morning a nest of baby finches on my patio exploded with activity. Wild finches love to nest on my third-floor patio behind my wall lamp. I assume they see it as a safe place to start off their family, out of sight and away from so many natural dangers. I hear the baby birds’ squeaky chirps and the joyful songs of their mom and dad sing as they happily share the responsibility of feeding these tiny babies. How amazing that the finches know just where to build a secure nest to establish their offspring. Each parent cares for and warms the eggs until the baby birds hatch.

Humble Beauty and the Art of Hospitality
An interview with Houston Coley digs into the art of hospitality.
- Can you briefly summarize what A Kingdom of Tea and Strangers is about?
The funny thing about this movie is that it’s about this place called L’Abri, which is notoriously hard to describe, and that’s part of why we wanted to make the film. L’Abri was founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer in the 1950s, as a shelter where people from all backgrounds around the world could engage with their deepest questions, thoughts, and doubts surrounding faith, philosophy, and human life while living in community for a short term stay. This film is a portrait of one summer at L’Abri, focusing on five particular strangers from around the world who are wrestling with some questions of their own, particularly about how to find community and spirituality in their ordinary lives.

So we started playing catch with my Luke Skywalker action figure and after one fumbled throw, Luke dropped through the iron grate of a storm drain. I still have the memory of seeing my prized toy only four feet away, but absolutely inaccessible.

Review: The Story of Juneteenth
