My pastor tells a story about going on a safari once, where they encountered a lion taking a nap right in the middle of the track. After the initial excitement and photo-taking were done, he turned to the driver and said, “Okay. Do we drive around or honk or something? What do we do now?”
The driver replied, “We wait. He’s the king.”
As we walk through this season of Advent—this season of waiting—I hope your waiting is full of anticipation and hope. The King is coming. Let all the earth rejoice.

Light and Warmth in Winter
David Mathis reminds us that the season of Advent is full of light.
- Advent gets me through the winter.
Now, the Minnesota winters are nothing to trifle with. They can last a full four months, sometimes five. Before long, these winters feel like half the year. Yet even as a South Carolina native, I endure them well enough with the help of a good Advent.

Books for Christmas Gift Guide 2024
It’s the time of year for best-of book lists, and I’m sure I’ll share a few more over the next few weeks. For now, our own Carolyn Leiloglou has her Christmas Gift Guide for 2024 up at House Full of Bookworms, and it’s chock-full of good books that released this year.

Tim Challies reminds us of the role we have to play in our own spiritual growth.
- Every Christian is a work in progress. Every Christian is striving for holiness, laboring to put off the old man and put on the new. Though none of us is as holy as we will be in heaven, I trust that each of us is holier now than when we first came to Christ. And none of us is as holy as we want to be.

Late In Time
Bethany J. Melton reflects on the waiting times.
- “Come back and see us,” she said. “We’ll be here.”
And as we turned in our coats to go, she caught me once more: “And enjoy yourselves. Have fun.”
This was just after she’d said she was bored of bingo, and couldn’t they offer more activities for the long, dark nights at the nursing home? She’d worked her whole life, she said. She’d been a schoolteacher for thirty years and had reared some good kids — even the rowdy boys who’d been a headache to corral. She loved her work.

Théa Rosenberg shares a little book with big theology.
- On board books, big theology, and hitting the mark:
One of the tragedies of no longer having toddlers in the house is that I no longer have anyone to read board books to. Which makes it hard to justify buying board books—but do I let that stop me? Of course not. We have babies and toddlers over often enough to warrant keeping a few good board books on hand, right? Perhaps board books I can then gift to some of our toddler friends?
