The Warren & The World Vol 12, Issue 38

November 2, 2024 by Carolyn Clare Givens Leave a Comment

What books are on your to-read list? I don’t have a physical or digital list, but my mental list seems to change with regularity. There are so many books to read, and my fancy for a particular genre or author at a given moment will triumph over any list I make anyway. So, I give in to the whims and just pick whatever I feel like!

Your family is no accident but God’s good plan

Roy and Jani Ortlund remind us that God’s plans include us.

  • You are a person of historic significance. God thinks so.
His plan for world history includes you. In fact, he “works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Eph. 1:11). How can that not include you?
And if it includes you, doesn’t it include your family too?
You and your marriage and your children are no accident – including that “surprise” baby you didn’t budget for! (We have one of those!) God has a thrilling purpose for your family, a purpose that extends long into the future.

Story Listening

Carolyn Clare Givens (oh, hey, that’s me) writes about the beauty of listening to tales.

  • I don’t remember when I first read the Narnia books. Same with the Little House on the Prairie books. Or Anne of Green Gables. I was steeped in these stories from infancy. With sisters nine and five years older than me, the family-favorite books (which category Narnia, Anne, and Little House fell into) were read to me multiple times before I picked them up myself.

*I Worked Hard on That! by Robyn Wall

Megan Saben reviews this poignant and resonant picture book for anyone who endeavors to make things.

  • Kiara the spider keeps trying to make a web that is beautiful, not just practical, and her efforts are repeatedly foiled. Playful language, lovely illustrations, and encouragement to keep trying to create make this a lovely story.

A Book for All Seasons

Christine Gordon reminds us that God’s word is like water.

  • Everyone has a water bottle nowadays. They come in every size and color, with a variety of price points and mechanisms. You can find them in the hands of schoolchildren, construction workers, bank tellers, and everyone in between—and that’s a good thing. We’ve learned that an appropriate amount of water in specific body systems can make or break our health. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, proper hydration regulates body temperature, keeps joints lubricated, prevents infections, delivers nutrients to cells, helps organs function properly, improves sleep quality, helps cognition, and regulates mood.[1] While most of us forget to drink as much as we should, most Americans now understand at least some of hydration’s benefits and try to get their glasses in every day. We know water will help us to function and even thrive, so we make sure to have it with us, no matter what we’re doing.

Fragile Faith, Compassionate Creator

Erica Robertson points our eyes to the one who created us.

  • I walked outside before dawn, not sure if I was happy to be awake, and there it was — the sky. Even in my sleepiness the brilliance of the stars amazed me. As I set out for a walk with my dog, I had to stop once more and gaze up. The magnitude of the universe struck me again, and my heart echoed, “What is man that you are mindful of him…” (Ps 8:4).

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness: A Book Review and a Memory

Sarah Dixon Young shares her story with a beloved book.

  • When I first read Andrew Peterson’s title, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, I remembered being there myself.
My father was a fisherman, and it was nighttime on the Atlantic in January. The slap of gentle waves against the ship made me sleepy as we sat silently side by side, staring out into the blackness, unable to see where the water met the sky.
