On this day in 1939, the film “The Wizard of Oz” premiered. A movie ticket at the time was 25¢ on average. Most critics praised the movie, but some people thought it was not a faithful adaptation of the book. I guess some things never change.

We’re always up for learning more about a Gary D. Schmidt book! The Redeemed Reader brings us a review of Trouble: “…I think it would make an excellent choice for teens who are wrestling with issues of justice and fairness. Henry certainly begins that great pivot from childhood to adulthood, seeing his parents as individuals with their own issues (and not just ‘parents’), recognizing the layers around the tragedy, and beginning to ask questions and seek understanding instead of accepting the status quo.”

You Are Not Enough (and That is Not Failure). “I wish I could say the era of Christian parenting formulas has passed. However, in Christian circles especially, we still love a book promising the key to parenting success. The good intentions are marketed quite well: connect with your kids, be a better mama, and have Christian kids because you raised them right. Who doesn’t want that? But approach with caution, because when you dig in, too often it’s another burdensome to-do list for mothers to ‘get it right.’”

Something to do with your kids

I just learned that these exist: Printable Escape Rooms from Etsy. For a small price, you can put together an escape room activity in your own home! These look very promising for a day when it’s raining or you just can’t stand the heat anymore.
