A Blessing for the Schoolbooks

I grew up in a part of the country where school never started until after Labor Day. I realize this calendar is largely a thing of the past, and now August seems to be the month for returning to school. I even had one teacher friend who returned in late July (horrified gasp).

Anyway, as you’re rounding up your textbooks and storybooks, here’s a blessing for all those stacks, big and little, new and used. May God bless your year!

Father, you have made us curious creatures.
Your ways of shaping our world have made it a delight to discover.
Your story unfolds over the years,
Showing man’s attempts to scale the heights.
Facts and stories spill out before us,
Raising new questions and yielding new lessons.

As we delve into new territory of learning,
As these pages turn in our hands and the questions turn in our heads,
Help us to grasp your beauty.
Our attempts to attain all of it will fail,
But help us to carry on, giving us what we need
Of grace, of perseverance, and of hope.

We know these pages are fallible, O Lord.
The words contained here are as limited as the men and women who wrote them.
Blessed are the bookmakers, we say,
But also—more blessed is he who sifts knowledge
Against your word, the light to our souls,
And the blessed book which points to the Word made flesh.

You are the Author of Instruction, God.
Help us to measure Lady Wisdom as the jewel she is.
When she calls to us in the street, let us answer.
May we welcome her and become like her;
in service to you and to others.
Give us love for knowledge and wisdom to live.

As these pages turn one by one, so too do our days and years of learning.
May they be fruitful to your glory, O Lord.
