April Giveaway: Mended Wood Literary Society
Here we are on the second-to-last day of April, and we’re getting our giveaway in right under the wire! This month’s booklist is all inspired by the Artemis II mission; we’ve got space books, an astronomer biography, and even a couple of graphic novels! Read on to find out about this month’s spacey selections.
Galaxies, Galaxies! Gail Gibbons. This is an informational picture book. The author covers the sheer number of galaxies in the universe (tough to grasp!), kinds of telescopes, and more. It’s a great introduction to the topic of space. Good for all ages.

Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11, Brian Floca. The illustrations are the star of this book; it covers the flight of Apollo 11 in 1969. The author draws a wonderful contrast between the noise of liftoff and the relative silence of the moon. Great for everyone, but best for slightly older elementary kids.
Dear Benjamin Banneker, Andrea Davis Pinkney. A picture book biography of Benjamin Banneker, astronomer and sometime correspondent of Thomas Jefferson. Banneker, a free black man from Maryland, exchanged letters with Jefferson on the topic of slavery. Great for all ages.

Find the Constellations, H. A. Rey. This book is by the same H. A. Rey who brought us Curious George! It’s my favorite book to learn the constellations, for kids and adults alike. It’s a great one to share as you get started reading the night sky.
Zita the Spacegirl, Ben Hatke. In this giveaway you’ll also find the first two books of the graphic novel series Zita the Spacegirl. Zita is a spunky space heroine, and her stories are delightful. It’s all fun and fictional space adventures. Good for early elementary kids.
As always, we will include a heavy-duty, not fragile, made-in-the-USA tote with our logo on it, ready for your trips to bookstores, libraries, and wherever your bookish adventures take you.
One winner will win the whole shebang, but two runners-up will receive one of our fantastic bags as their prizes.

I need help learning the constellations. My granddaughter and I could learn them together!
Find the Constellations!
We would love Zita the Spacegirl. My son’s reading has taken off and he’s really enjoying graphic novels.
The Curious George constellations book would be amazing for our new school library!:) Thank you for all that you do!
I have a boy who would love the Find the Constellations book. We watched a bunch of the Artemis II journey and he was so excited about all of it.
I love Brian’s Floca’s books, so Moonshit would be my top pick.
What an engaging curation! We are building our Brian Floca collection, and still doing Artemis II related deep dives, all of these titles would be a delight!
They all look wonderful, but I\’m drawn to Find the Constellations!!
The Galaxies, Galaxies book would be great for my younger kids and the Benjamin Banneker book interests me (we know about his clock making). The girls would love Zits the space girl!

I love these picks! My son would love all of these, but I think Moonshot would be very interesting to him.
I mean, H.A. Rey made a book about constellations??? That and Moonshot sound like winners to me.
My son lives all things space. Any of these would be great, but I\’m interested in Dear Benjamin Banneker.
We would love to own Zita. My 9 year old loves that series!
I\’d love to give away HA Rey\’s Find the Constellations because if he knows Curious George, he\’ll know constellations!
I didn\’t know Pinkney had a Benjamin Banneker book! We\’ve read several biographies of him in school. We\’d love the picture book.
Find the Constellations would be such a fun book!
I would live to learn about Benjamin Banndker. I had not heard of him before.
find the Constellations sounds so fun! We’ve put some constellations on our toddler’s ceiling and he loves naming them
Dear Benjamin Banneker looks like a great book to read-aloud. I have a delightlful memory about the H. A. Ray Find the Constellations book. In 2019, we backpacked with my parents and our six kids to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We marveled in God\’s creation and camped at Phantom Ranch. One by one, our kids came down with the worst stomach bug we have ever had in a place where we had no extra clothes, blankets, soap, or way to heat water. The Park rangers at Phantom Ranch and on the way back up the Grand Canyon were incredibly kind and helpful to us, and we were so thankful that there was a library of books available for us to use while our kids rested at our campsite. A seasoned Park ranger worked in the library, and he recommended the Find the Constellations book. It was so neat to lay on rocks at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and look at that book with our kids.
I would love to gift Find the Constellations to my son to use with his boys. I know they would enjoy learning together!
