The Child and the Star

Said the child to the star,
“Why do you hang so high?
You needn’t climb so very far
To stand there in the sky.”
Said the star to the child,
“If I do not mount this spot,
I will not see you smile
When you dream of lovely thoughts.”

Said the child to the star,
“Why do you shine so clear,
Though you light the smallest spark
Upon the sunless sphere?”
Said the star to the child,
“See against the black
That my white so mute and mild
Has made a little crack.”

Said the child to the star,
“Why do you wait all night,
When the world is very dark
With only little flames of light?”
Said the star to the child,
“It is worth the long night’s wake
To see the shadow exile
And to watch the dawn’s slow break.”
