Story Warren Weekend, Vol. 14, Issue 8

Hi there,
It brings me great joy to announce to you that you have made it through February. And I’ll bet some of you didn’t just make it through…you flourished. Well done. Those of you who just made it, you also did well. More sunshine is ahead in March.

Around the Web
Tim Challies introduces us to a book on that most difficult of experiences, The Suffering of a Child. “In my family, we have often found it necessary to distinguish between why God permits suffering and how he uses it….It is through faithful testimonies like [the author’s] that others can learn how to suffer well and learn that it is possible to endure the deepest sorrows while still loving God and proclaiming his glories.”
This book review on Redeemed Reader caught my eye: The Stuff That Stuff is Made Of. “This oversize picture book contains a wealth of illustration and interesting facts about the uses, origin, and unique characteristics of 58 plants, from the familiar (wheat, potato, cotton) to the more exotic (baobab, blue gum, gutta-percha).” The cover is so interesting!
Around the Warren

Liz Cottrill brought us a Middle Ages story for kids, “The Knights of the Silver Shield.” “I thank God for the Middle Ages, as that long distant, turbulent, and shadowy period of history is so unimaginatively labeled, not because it kept civilization alive, and Christianity alive – though obviously I’m thankful for that – but mostly because its characters and culture preserved in tales and poetry for us, provided my children with endless hours of imaginative adventures of their own.”
We revisited Carolyn Clare Givens’ call for Beautiful Books: “…books with lyrical prose, imaginative characters, lovely illustrations, and stories which give glimpses of a world beyond our own tend to land in the category. I would say that most of the books I call ‘beautiful’ are books which help me glimpse the way things ought to be—the way they were in creation and will be in new creation.”
Something to do with your kids
Here’s a great list of thirty-one things to do with kids in the month of March! The weather can vary this month, so stay flexible.

Something to watch
Confession: I found this one very soothing.
