The Start of Something New
Bandersnatch Books (oh, hey, that’s actually me) has just launched a new weekly newsletter full of bookish thoughts, literary quotes, and more! We invite you to sign up and see what’s to come!
- So we find ourselves here, on a Substack, writing words about words. We can’t promise to be eloquent every time, but in each email, you’ll hear some bookish thoughts from a member of our Bandersnatch team, see highlights of what’s coming up (in-person events, releases, submission periods, etc.), catch a glimpse of what’s happening on social media, and read a literary quote we love (sometimes from our books, sometimes from other books!).

How to Move from Restlessness to True Rest
Ruth Chou Simons encourages us to move to rest.
- recently saw an old photograph of me from college. My hair was short—a pixie cut, they called it. I knew that look by another name. It was the I’m-so-frustrated-I-don’t-know-what-to-do-so-I’ll-chop-off-all-my-hair hairdo. If I remember correctly, it was triggered by a tumultuous breakup with Troy before we got back together again.
In retrospect, the drastic haircut wasn’t purely to spite him; it was a desperate attempt to make some kind of change, any change, that might soothe my heart that had just been broken, that was restlessly looking for something. I felt impatient for change.
We’re restless people.

Whittling Mushrooms and Practicing Patience
Paul McKinley practices patience.
- My sons and I are learning to whittle. With careful hands and practiced movements we’re each shaving off slivers of basswood to turn our blocks into forms that hopefully look like mushrooms. The first slivers had barely hit our living room floor before a dozen wood creations were crafted in our minds.
“I want to carve a gnome for my mushroom,” my eldest states. “Or a sword.”

The Book of Three
The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander follows Taran, a humble boy with the humble job of looking after a pig. He wants to be a hero and go on great daring adventures but doesn’t realize how important and instrumental he can be until his charge goes missing. Can Taran rise to the challenge and save Prydain? As far as middle grade medieval fantasy goes, this first novel in the Chronicles of Prydain series is super enjoyable. The classic premise and hero’s journey was right up my alley as a young voracious reader. Give it a try!
The Green Ember
The Green Ember is another middle grade classic, enchanting readers of all ages for 10 years now! Heather and Picket live simple idyllic lives with their family until disaster strikes when their home is destroyed, and their family is taken captive by evil wolves. Will these rabbit siblings fight the darkness and let hope prevail? I would recommend giving The Green Ember a try as an audiobook or read aloud; It has heart and hope as well as humor and fun.
