The Warren & The World Vol 12, Issue 14

April 13, 2024 by Carolyn Clare Givens Leave a Comment

This year, April in North Carolina hasn’t felt like early summer, and for that I’m grateful. I love to revel in the beauty of the flowering trees and plants all around me. The pollen is high and the heat is coming, but for now, I will look out the window and rejoice at the beauty.

What is the most important thing you’ve really got to know because it changes everything

Ann Voskamp reminds us of what is most important.

  • “In one sentence, what does it come down to — what is the one most important thing for people to know?”

The Art of Oral-Storytelling

Zane Sherrer reminds us that everyone is a storyteller.

  • There is something incredible about the power and art of oral storytelling. I know everyone has stories, and I’m persuaded that everyone is a storyteller. Just try and notice this week how many stories are shared with you verbally: perhaps a small story from a co-worker and their lunch break antics, or of seeing a crazy driver on the road. Or maybe it’s the tale your spouse spins at night as they recount the day. And of course we can’t ignore the many sweet and ever-cherishable chronicles of little children, as they gleefully share with us their hearts. I was witness to this art of storytelling in a new way not long ago.

Birthday with the Bard

We’re coming up on Shakespeare’s birthday, and A.C.S. Bird has resources for us.

  • Early in my marriage, my mother-in-law suggested I might someday like to have her wax bust of Shakespeare. I don’t recall my response; I hope it was gracious, though I’m not optimistic on that point. What I thought was, What on earth would I do with it?
A couple of decades later, the bust is one of our most prized heirlooms, and not least because it has stood in for the Bard at numerous posthumous birthday parties—at home, in the bookstall I used to operate, and in my daughter’s grade school classrooms.
