Hummingbird Poems: Archilochus colubris II

Archilochus colubris II

Peasant Joan
full of grace
steals in softly
while King George is away.

She dips her head
and drinks long
of the sweet water,
pausing only to listen,
only a moment.

Another long draught
and a sly turn of her graceful head:
King George races by
calling someone a thief.

She never flinches,
never quavers,
but drinks long and deep
of the living water
till King George returns
and she takes her leave.

Atta girl.
Drink up.
This abundance is for you, too.
