Hummingbird Poems: Archilochus colubris III

Archilochus colubris III

Eleanor flits,
curious,
desiring to see
the sons of Adam
enthroned before her
in folding chairs.

She hides to drink,
but raises a cautious head
and weighs the young magi
with a single bright eye.

She grows braver with each visit.

Eleanor flits,
hovers
dances before them,
little knowing she has captured
the heart of a king.

Her courage has found favor—
for he has determined to feed her
from his own hand.

  1. I feel like I know brave Eleanor, foolish King George, and graceful Joan personally. Thank you for introducing us to them in such a lovely way!
