Rallying Against the Darkness
I am a homeschool mom to three kiddos: 7 and 9 year old girls and an 11 year old boy. My girls still play imaginatively quite often, with and without toys. My son, on the other hand, has grown out of most toys and hasn’t played pretend in a while. He has been the one who has fallen most in love with your stories and after I finished reading the 4 “main” Green Ember books to them last week, he has been tearing through the audiobook versions of the others.
Yesterday afternoon they headed out to the pool and a bit later my son came in to ask if they could cut a pool noodle into swords. I gave him scissors, told him “sure!” and knew immediately what they were going to do. They jumped right into Green Ember battles – first with one another, with someone playing the part of Redeye Garlickson or Falcowit, but eventually, they banded together and started saying the oath to one another as they fought the pretend preylords and wolves. This fighting pretend play didn’t surprise me too much for my son, but what came next did. The girls took the roles of Emma and Heather as healers and made a makeshift hospital bed on our pool table in the garage where they led Picket (my son) and cared for him. Over and over again this went on for several hours, well after dark and their bedtime. I just let them live in the wonderful world of imaginative play and rallying against the darkness. My son was fully engaged and playing pretend like he hasn’t in years, and it brought me so much joy.
I hope that this (probably overshare) is an encouragement to you to keep showing up in the ways that God has called you to. For the children’s sake and for His glory. My family is praying for yours!
Thank you again,
Chelsea
