As summer slips into autumn and we begin to anticipate the changing colors of the leaves and the slowing of the season, our family loves to snuggle in with a warm drink and some autumn-themed picture books. Here are 5 picture book recommendations for autumn:
Apples to Oregon: Being the (Slightly) True Narrative of How a Brave Pioneer Father Brought Apples, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Grapes, and Cherries (and Children) Across the Plains, by Deborah Hopkinson and Nancy Carpenter
A fun adventure on the Oregon Trail, how a family had a vision for the future and fought for it through many obstacles.
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson
Fletcher’s favorite tree is losing its leaves and he is worried about it. His mom tells him not to worry but he still tries to help his tree.
From Seed to Pumpkin by Wendy Pfeffer
Find out how a small seed grows into a large pumpkin to be harvested in the fall.
Every Autumn Comes the Bear, by Jim Arnosky
We are a big fan of Jim Arnosky’s nature picture books and this is no exception. See what the bear gets up to as autumn approaches.
Autumn Story by Jill Barklem
The first Brambly Hedge book I ever bought and possibly my favorite. All the mice of Brambly Hedge are getting the harvest in before winter, but Primrose gets lost. Will she find her way home? Full of beautifully detailed illustrations.

Two of our favorites are Pumpkin Town by Katy Mcky and Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. (This one is absolutely amazing and provides a great autumn activity with collected leaves and pine cones and acorns and all that falls from trees. It’s one of our favorite books of any season!)
