We Are God’s Masterpiece: A Brand New Slugs & Bugs (Sing The Bible) Song!

This past Spring, we visited the High School our eldest (Livi) is scheduled to attend this Fall. Beneath a painting, framed in the hallway, I spied this verse:

“We are God’s Masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus. So we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

I had read Bible translations using the word “handiwork” or “workmanship” but “masterpiece” immediately inspired me. With parents and teachers walking by, I snuck out my phone in the hallway and whispered a melody into the recorder. I finished the song this week, visiting with family in Northern Arkansas. Amy, Livi, and I recorded it for this post at Story Warren.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Sing the Bible Volume 2 is a collection of word-for-word Scripture songs filled with practical instruction for Christian life. Do not worry. Do nothing out of selfish ambition. Give generously. Tell the world about Jesus. Do everything without grumbling. Thankfully, there are also songs like this one that lay the foundations of our faith, which is built on God’s grace. Taken together, the verses for Sing the Bible Volume 2 will amount to a musical handbook for a Christian home.

In some ways, the words of Ephesians 2:8-10 summarize the whole record, explaining the miraculous gift of salvation and revealing Christ as the source of all our “good deeds”(Matthew 5:16).
