Story Warren Weekend, Vol. 14, Issue 22

Hi there,

Raise your hand if you have a kid taking the ACT this morning.

We parents can do our best to prepare and pray, but eventually it’s just the kid versus the questions! It makes me nostalgic for the days of sharpened number two pencils. Things seem much higher stakes now than they used to.

The Gift of Finitude. A. B. Donahue reminds us “…you still can’t do it all. And that’s ok. Finitude is not fallenness. Adam and Eve were created with finitude, and they were declared good. Finitude isn’t a bug of being human; it’s a feature. As people, we have a finite number of hours in our day, money in the bank, and brain cells firing. To use some church language, we have time, talents, and treasure—but not endless amounts of any of these things.”

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

The Aroma of Christ in the Mundane. “Through simple, daily faithfulness, we can rest in the knowledge that God is pleased with us. We do not earn His approval through more disciplined Bible reading, more consistent prayer, or more perfectly managed homes. Christ’s perfect obedience has already been credited to us by faith. Nothing we do can add to or take away from His finished work.”

Carolyn Leiloglou reminded us of The Gift of an Unscheduled Summer. “I believe we parents just as much need a break from all our shuttling back and forth, from all our spinning plates (or at least from a few of them). Because our kids aren’t the only ones who need a chance to dream, to imagine, and to just be.”

Kelly Keller wrote up a review for the new family resource Stories Woven in Silver. “There are certainly benefits to focusing on explicitly Christian fiction and well-crafted discipleship material. When the boundaries are clear, it’s easier to avoid battles arising over popular books with themes that may be too mature for a child. Yet those who adopt this approach often miss out on the joy that comes from finding truth in surprising places because of common grace.”

Something to do with your kids

There’s some great encouragement here: How My Family Uses Yoto to Teach Our Kids the Faith. “We began to build a family library that is at the service of our family’s vision for discipleship. We save websites, resources, links, videos, and conference materials. We occasionally print off what we can, and put it in a place we know we will remember it.”
