Story Warren Weekend, Vol. 14, Issue 20

Hi there,

This year, Memorial Day was the earliest it could conceivably be on the calendar, so we have an additional weekend here at the end of May. Maybe you are adjusting fine to this development, but in my house we have had a hard time processing this. We’ve been mixed up on dates all week long.

Around the Web

A great suggestion from Tim Challies: “This is something parents and teachers have to do when they read books to children, or else the children tune out. It is a skill that transfers well to reading the Bible before a congregation…. If you want to become a better public reader of Scripture, then work on becoming better at reading books to children.”

Ida B. Wells’ Public Faith: “Her faith does not show up in doctrinal exposition, but in her confidence that God judges nations, that institutions can sin, and that truth spoken publicly is an act of obedience to God. We rightly celebrate the sermons of Knox, the persistence of Wilberforce, and the political leadership of Kuyper, her contemporary, no less. Ida B. Wells belongs in their company.”

Around the Warren

This week we got to know the Addie books, with the help of our reviewer Jennifer Harris. “The Girl and the Green Hat is the second installment in the Addie Brown series by UK-based author, Rachel Allord. Middle grade readers will be able to relate to this modern-day story of growing pains, monumentous life changes, navigating both old and new friendships, and the deep heart issues we need to wrestle with if we are to welcome change in our lives and open our hearts and lives to others.”

We revisited this short biography of Virginia Lee Burton, author of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and other kids’ classics. “Burton would often read her drafts to her children and their friends and ask for their feedback. When they suggested edits, she went back to her desk and tried again. She felt that this prevented her from “writing down” to children, as so many storybooks are prone to do.”

Something to do with your kids

OK, some of these look borderline crazy, but there is no end of fun to be had with these 40+ Fun Summer Camp Games for Kids. (Are you coordinating VBS or day camp this year? This link will serve you well.)

Something to watch

Here’s a sweet short film called “Archie.” Enjoy!

Thanks for reading. We’re on your side.
