Story Warren Weekend, Vol. 13, Issue 43

Hi everyone,

Last week I got to see the state of Colorado for the very first time. I’m an East Coast girl—I’ve been on this side of the Mississippi for my entire life, save a two-year pilgrimage to California, and I was amazed all over again at just how big our country is. Wondrous!

Coming this week: our Helmer game releases this Tuesday, November 18! To celebrate this auspicious occasion, we’re celebrating with a LIVE event. You can find the link right here. There will be gameplay, the usual banter, and some great giveaways! We hope to see you there!

P.S. If you’re interested in more game news, we’ve got a Longtreader Games newsletter from Zach Franzen! It’s equal parts wise, funny, and informative. Subscribe today!

Around the Web

Here’s a reflection on Henry Ossawa Tanner’s The Thankful Poor, plus The Art of Thankfulness. “While we can and should lament the past, Tanner rose above it, and above those who mistreated him. He did not wallow in the injustice but used it to paint truth as in this painting where he depicts the dignity and worth of the old man and young boy, created in the Imago Dei.”

Jonathan Dodson reminds us that Beauty Bears Witness to God. “Art is haunted by beauty, and beautiful things point beyond themselves to more perfect beauty. Psalm 50 says, ‘Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth’ (v. 2). We’re meant to trace this world’s splendor back to its Creator.”

Around the Warren

Earlier this week, contributor Diana Barto brought us a helpful list of her favorite Thanksgiving books and read-alouds. “Beauty in nature is hard to find in a Minnesota November. It’s easy to slip into complaining and feeling discontent. But then the calendar reminds me that Thanksgiving is coming.”

Writer Théa Rosenburg offered us some good wisdom for finding what’s right for her family with activity—and the lack thereof. “But what those other families need may not be what our family needs; the faithfulness they’re called to may not mirror the faithfulness we’re called to. Our daughters may not compete in gymnastics meets or earn their black belts, but they eat dinner at home almost every night, in the company of one another.”

Something to do with your kids

We saw loads of pictures of the Northern Lights this week. In the spirit of skywatching, on a clear night, you can try out a constellation hunt!

Something to watch

Here’s a little lesson on making placecards (placeturkeys?) for your Thanksgiving table.

Thanks for reading. We’re on your side.
